The declining number of active gauging stations in many rivers is a global concern, necessitating the need for reliable streamflow estimates. Deep learning (DL) techniques offer potential solutions, but their application in southern Africa remains largely underexplored. To fill this gap, this study evaluated the predictive performance of Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks using two headwater catchments of the Steelpoort River, South Africa, as case studies. The model inputs included rainfall, maximum and minimum temperature, as well as past streamflow, which was utilized in an autoregressive sense. The inclusion of streamflow in this way allowed for the incorporation of simulated streamflow values into the look-back window (LBW) for predicting the streamflow of the testing set. Two modifications were required to the GRU and LSTM architectures to ensure physically consistent predictions. Including a change in activation function of the GRU/LSTM cells in the final hidden layer, and a non-negative constraint that was used in the dense layer. Issues that were adequately\r\naddressed in easily traceable existing publications, e.g. the Agrohydrology Atlas by\r\nSchulze (1997) generally were not duplicated. Implied by this approach is the\r\npossibility of subjectivity from the side of the compilers and the DoA project leaders.\r\nSincere apologies are tendered for any erring in that respect.\r\n\r\nThe report is organized in two parts. Part One contains baseline information. Part Two\r\nconsiders some of the pressures on land. This distinction is rather arbitrary. Former\r\nhomelands, for example, were a pressure once and may now be conisidered part of\r\nthe baseline. Hoffman (1999), in following UNCCD, used a completely different\r\nconceptual framework for the National Review of Land Degradation in\r\nSouth Africa.\r\n\r\nIn the present approach, climate is regarded as part of the biophysical baseline on\r\nwhich human activities impact. One might ask what the relation is between this report\r\nand the much more comprehensive Hoffman report.
